Sunday’s Ligue 1 match between Marseille and Lille was marred by a heated on-field brawl sparked by a hard tackle on Mason Greenwood. The incident occurred early in the contest, quickly escalating into a physical confrontation between players from both sides.
The match, played at the Stade Orange Velodrome on March 22nd, saw tensions flare just 12 minutes into the game.
The catalyst was a forceful challenge by Lille’s Calvin Verdonk on Greenwood, who was attempting a quick counter-attack. The defender went in with a late, lunging tackle on the former Manchester United striker.

Greenwood immediately reacted to the tackle, grabbing Verdonk’s arm. The Lille player responded by boldly confronting the Marseille forward.
Moments later, Lille players surged forward, colliding with Greenwood and sending him to the ground again. This ignited further anger from the Marseille side, with players quickly rushing to defend their teammate.

Referee Benoit Bastien intervened to restore order, eventually issuing yellow cards to Verdonk and Hakon Haraldsson of Lille, as well as Greenwood.
Lille ultimately secured a 2-1 victory. After falling behind to an Ethan Nwaneri goal, the visitors rallied with second-half strikes from Thomas Meunier and Olivier Giroud.
