East Kalimantan Warns of Measles Spread During Eid al-Fitri

Health officials in East Kalimantan province are urging residents to be vigilant against the spread of measles, particularly as increased travel and gatherings are expected during the Eid al-Fitr celebrations. The warning comes as public health experts consistently emphasize the importance of preventative measures against infectious diseases, especially during periods of heightened social interaction.

Fit Nawaty, Head of Disease Prevention and Control at the East Kalimantan Provincial Health Office, stressed on Monday, March 23, 2026, that maintaining public health is a shared responsibility. “Health issues are a collective responsibility. It requires the involvement of the community through education and collective awareness,” Nawaty said.

Increased mobility during the Eid al-Fitr period raises the risk of transmission, officials noted. Parents are advised to limit contact between infants and young children with large crowds to minimize exposure to the virus.

In addition to limiting exposure, residents are encouraged to practice good hygiene, including frequent handwashing, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and adequate rest. “If the body’s immune system is strong, the risk of viral infection can be minimized to prevent it from developing into a more severe condition,” Nawaty explained.

Individuals experiencing measles symptoms – such as fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a red rash – should seek medical attention immediately. Early intervention is critical to prevent serious complications like breathing difficulties and severe diarrhea.

The warning is particularly important for infants under 9 months of age who have not yet received measles immunization. Officials also remind the public that the measles virus can be transmitted by individuals who appear healthy.

“The government continues to work to increase immunization coverage. We encourage the public to ensure that children receive complete immunizations according to the schedule,” Nawaty stated. This ongoing effort to improve immunization rates is a key strategy in protecting the population from preventable diseases.
