Polish Short Track Skater Reveals Scar After Olympic Accident
Kamila Sellier, a Polish short track speed skater, has publicly revealed the scar she sustained during a frightening accident at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina. The incident occurred during the quarterfinals of the women’s 1,500-meter race on February 20, 2026, when Sellier lost her footing and was cut by the skate blade of American Kristen Santos-Griswold.
Sellier, 25, shared images of the scar on social media, marking the first time she has shown the visible result of the injury. According to reports from USA Today, Sellier received stitches above her left eye immediately following the crash. She was briefly paused during the quarterfinals while medical personnel attended to her.
Despite the severity of the injury, Sellier was quick to defend Santos-Griswold, emphasizing the inherent risks of the sport. “I kindly ask you not to place any blame on her,” she wrote in an Instagram story. “What happened was not anyone’s fault. What we have is the nature of our sport — it carries inherent risks, and I am fully aware of them every time I step onto the ice.”
Initial reports indicated Sellier may have suffered a fractured zygomatic bone, commonly known as the cheekbone, in addition to the laceration. However, further test results were pending at the time of the accident, as reported by USA Today. She reportedly gave a thumbs-up as she was being wheeled off the ice.
Santos-Griswold was penalized for an illegal lane pass, ending her Olympic campaign. The incident has sparked discussion about safety in short track speed skating, a sport known for its close-quarters racing and potential for collisions. Sellier’s willingness to publicly defend her competitor underscores the sportsmanship often seen within the Olympic community.
Sellier’s injury occurred during a heat that also involved Italy’s Arianna Fontana. While the crash ended Sellier’s participation in the event, her message of forgiveness and understanding has resonated with fans and fellow athletes alike. The Polish speed skating team’s Sports Director, Konrad Niedźwiedzki, shared updates with Polish media following the incident.
