Costa Rica is proving to be a surprisingly expensive destination for travelers, according to a recent warning from British travel personalities Stephen and Viv. The couple, known for their appearance on the BBC’s Race Across the World, shared their experience on social media, advising potential visitors to prepare for high costs.
“Money warning. We’re in Costa Rica at the moment and are amazed at how expensive everything is. Everything costs a lot in Costa Rica,” they stated in a video posted to their social media channels.
Stephen suggested that travelers planning a trip to the country should double their estimated budget. To illustrate the point, they cited the cost of a 90-minute salsa lesson, which they said totaled $53 per person. “It’s not necessarily a scam, it’s just that it’s expensive here,” they added.
The couple’s warning sparked debate online, with many commenters echoing their sentiments. “I agree, it’s extremely expensive,” one user wrote, while another noted the high costs for those already living in Costa Rica.
Some social media users criticized Stephen and Viv for complaining about prices, pointing out that they hadn’t commented on the cost of living during a recent trip to Novel York City. Others explained that Costa Rica often charges higher prices for tourists, particularly at national parks, a practice the couple said they disagreed with, arguing for equal pricing for all. Several commenters also attributed the higher costs to gentrification and a general increase in the cost of living.
Stephen and Viv are a British travel couple who gained prominence after competing on the reality television show Race Across the World. Stephen is originally from Liverpool, while Viv hails from London. The pair, who have seven children, currently reside in Uppingham, where they met in 2005 while working at Uppingham Community College. After overcoming serious health challenges – Stephen suffered a heart attack and Viv a stroke in 2011 – they created a list of experiences that inspired them to rediscover their passion for travel and adventure. The couple continues to create travel content and inspirational tourism media.
