São Raimundo Nonato, Brazil – Authorities in the city of São Raimundo Nonato have declared a public health emergency due to a significant surge in dengue fever cases. The declaration, formalized through a decree published on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, is initially in effect for 60 days, with the possibility of extension. This move underscores the growing global challenge of mosquito-borne diseases and the need for proactive public health measures.

According to official reports, 290 cases of dengue have been reported in the municipality between February and March 2026. This translates to an incidence rate of approximately 725 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which is classified as a high transmission rate based on guidelines from the Ministry of Health. The situation is considered critical, with a concerning increase in cases observed since 2023.

The municipal government reports a roughly 157% increase in dengue cases between 2023, and 2026. Some patients are presenting with warning signs, suggesting a potential for more severe illness. A five-year-old child reportedly died with suspected dengue in the city’s UPA (Emergency Care Unit) on March 24, 2026, according to reports from GP1 and Portal Grande Picos.

In response to the escalating situation, the São Raimundo Nonato city government is developing a comprehensive dengue control plan. This plan will involve coordinated efforts across various secretariats, with a focus on intensifying home visits, organizing community clean-up drives, eliminating mosquito breeding sites, and strengthening healthcare services. The decree as well authorizes emergency measures, including the procurement of supplies, medications, and equipment, as well as the temporary hiring of additional personnel.

The government is also prepared to waive bidding requirements in urgent situations related to combating arboviruses – diseases transmitted by mosquitoes like dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. The Piauí state, where São Raimundo Nonato is located, is currently leading the incidence of dengue in the Northeast region of Brazil, with nearly 1,900 suspected cases reported in 2026, according to Folha de Oeiras.

Officials urge residents to take preventative measures to protect themselves from mosquito bites and eliminate potential breeding grounds around their homes.
