Tensions Remain High as U.S. And Iran Continue Negotiations

Washington and Tehran are engaged in ongoing peace talks despite conflicting statements regarding their progress, as the conflict in the Middle East continues to escalate. The situation underscores the fragility of the region and the potential for further instability.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday, March 23, 2026, that the war in Iran has already been won, a claim disputed by Iranian officials. According to reports, Trump similarly indicated that Iran is “hesitant to say” it wants to reach a deal “at any price.”

However, Iran’s foreign ministry has denied any direct dialogue with Washington, according to state-affiliated media. This denial comes after Trump announced he would postpone potential military strikes against Iranian energy sites for five days, following earlier threats if Tehran did not fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The announcement led to a drop in oil prices.

Despite the denial of direct talks, the White House maintains that negotiations are “productive.” Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt warned on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, that Trump is prepared to “unleash hell” on Iran if Tehran does not accept a deal to end the war. Leavitt stated, “If Iran fails to accept the reality of the current moment, if they fail to understand that they have been defeated militarily and will continue to be, President Trump will ensure they are hit harder than they have ever been hit before.”

Leavitt also acknowledged “elements of truth” to media reports detailing a 15-point U.S. Plan outlining demands on Tehran. However, Iranian state media reported on Wednesday that Tehran rejected Washington’s proposal to pause the war, and indicated plans for potential actions targeting Tel Aviv and regional allies of the U.S. And Israel.

The number of reported deaths in Iran and Lebanon since the start of the conflict has risen to the thousands. According to early reports, the Israeli military conducted strikes on targets in Iran on Monday, March 23, 2026, targeting what they described as “regime targets in the heart of Iran.” Rescue workers were shown rescuing a child from the rubble of a residential building in Tehran following a reported strike.

CNN is following the latest updates on the conflict.
