As the world observes World Colon and Rectal Cancer Day on March 31, the National Cancer Institute (INC) is urging citizens, healthcare professionals, and families to prioritize prevention and early detection efforts for this serious disease. Recognizing the signs of colorectal cancer and seeking timely medical attention are crucial, as it remains a significant health concern globally and within Colombia.

The INC emphasized the importance of recognizing warning signs and promptly seeking medical attention, noting that colorectal cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related illness and death worldwide.

Global data from the International Agency for Research on Cancer’s GLOBOCAN 2022 report reveals the substantial impact of this cancer. In 2022 alone, over 1.9 million new cases were diagnosed worldwide.

The report also indicated more than 900,000 deaths were associated with the disease in 2022, making it the third most frequently diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death globally. This data underscores the urgent need for increased awareness and preventative measures.

In Colombia, the situation mirrors the global trend. Recent estimates suggest approximately 4,142 new cases of colon cancer were recorded, resulting in around 2,286 deaths. These figures highlight the significant public health burden posed by the disease within the country.

In response, the INC is renewing its call to strengthen education, prevention, and early diagnosis strategies across all populations. Adopting a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular physical activity, is a key component of reducing risk.

The institute also stressed the critical role of early detection through screening, which can identify precancerous lesions and significantly improve treatment outcomes.

To raise awareness, the INC is promoting its television program “Vida y Cáncer” (Life and Cancer), an educational show that combines scientific information with personal stories.

the INC’s podcast “Vida y Cáncer,” available on digital platforms, features specialists discussing prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of colorectal cancer, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to health education and timely intervention.
