AI Detects Breast Cancer Too Minor for Human Eye, Study Finds

A new study led by the University of Aberdeen has revealed that artificial intelligence can improve breast cancer detection rates by more than 10%. This advancement in medical technology offers the potential for earlier diagnoses and improved patient outcomes, highlighting the growing role of AI in healthcare.

Researchers evaluated how AI software could support healthcare professionals in routine mammograms of over 10,000 women, likewise enabling faster delivery of results. The findings, published in the journal Nature Cancer, showed a 10.4% increase in detection rates.

Yvonne Cook, a 60-year-vintage resident of Aberdeen, participated in the AI research and was diagnosed with breast cancer thanks to the technology. “I feel incredibly lucky,” she stated.

The AI tool, called Mia, was developed by medical technology company Kheiron. It is designed to identify small and subtle areas in mammograms that might be missed by human observation. The technology’s ability to pinpoint these areas could be crucial for early intervention.

The study’s results will now be expanded as part of a larger trial analyzing the use of AI in mammography centers across the United Kingdom. This broader implementation will help determine the technology’s effectiveness in diverse clinical settings and patient populations.

According to Breastcancer.org, artificial intelligence is showing real potential to help radiologists detect cancerous tissue more quickly and accurately and to predict an individual’s risk of breast cancer. The use of AI in predicting cancer raises questions, but the technology is already being used to analyze medical images and identify patterns that may indicate the presence of disease.

The findings from the University of Aberdeen build on this growing body of evidence, suggesting that AI could turn into an increasingly valuable tool in the fight against breast cancer.
