Bangladesh is currently grappling with a severe measles outbreak that has claimed the lives of nearly 100 children in just three weeks. According to official data released on Sunday, April 5, 2026, at least 98 children have died, prompting the government to launch emergency vaccination drives in the hardest-hit regions.
The Ministry of Health reported that suspected measles cases have surged to 6,476 among children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years. Halimur Rashid, Director of the Center for Disease Control, noted that both the number of affected children and the mortality rate are higher than in previous years, highlighting a concerning trend in the country’s public health landscape. This increase in severity underscores the ongoing challenges in maintaining consistent immunization coverage.
In response to the escalating crisis, Prime Minister Tariq Rahman has ordered two senior ministers to travel across the nation to evaluate the scale of the outbreak and coordinate relief efforts for the population of 170 million.
