Technip Energies (PARIS:TE) has secured a significant agreement with Long Son Petrochemicals Co., Ltd. (LSP) to implement the Long Son Petrochemicals Enhancement (LSPE) project on Long Son Island, Vietnam, the company announced on April 9, 2026.
Under the terms of the pioneering contract in Vietnam to convert a steam cracker to ethane reflects a broader global trend among petrochemical producers to diversify feedstocks and adopt lower-carbon inputs to secure supply chains. The move highlights the critical role of feedstock flexibility in the petrochemical value chain, as steam crackers transform hydrocarbons—such as ethane, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), or naphtha—into ethylene and propylene, the essential building blocks for textiles, plastics, packaging materials, and consumer goods.
The new contract further solidifies the ongoing partnership between the two firms. Technip Energies previously managed the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of the Long Son site’s cracker unit from 2018 to 2023.
The scope of the current enhancement project at the Long Son Petrochemicals complex includes the supply of proprietary burners for the plant’s cracking furnaces, as well as site assistance and comprehensive engineering and procurement services. This development underscores the industry’s focus on operational optimization and environmental sustainability.
Industry observers note that this project is among the first in recent years worldwide to transition a naphtha-based steam cracker to ethane, signaling a strategic pivot toward more flexible and sustainable production models. The contract for a petrochemical site in Vietnam positions Technip Energies as a key partner in LSP’s efforts to modernize its infrastructure.
Further details regarding the improvement project for the Long Son Petrochemicals complex emphasize the goal of achieving long-term strategic resilience amidst a volatile global market.
