UCI Suspends New Zealand Rider Kiaan Watts Following Mid-Race Punch
The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has officially suspended New Zealand cyclist Kiaan Watts after a violent altercation during the Ster van Zwolle in the Netherlands. The 24-year-old rider, competing for the NSN Devo Team, is barred from competition from April 9, 2026, through May 2, 2026.
The disciplinary action follows an incident on March 7, 2026, during the 1.2-ranked event. Video footage captured Watts delivering a closed-fist punch to fellow rider Marijn Maas of BEAT CC p/b Saxo at the front of the peloton. The assault occurred approximately 33.7 kilometers from the finish line, leaving the Dutch cyclist reeling from a sudden blow.
Immediate sanctions were handed down by the Commissaires’ Panel during the race, which included Watts’ disqualification from the event, a CHF 200 fine and the deduction of 25 UCI Points. His team also took swift action, pulling him from his subsequent race, the Dorpenomloop Rucphen, and imposing a one-day suspension on March 8, 2026.
The UCI later completed its disciplinary proceedings, noting that Watts acknowledged the violation of article 12.4.009 of the UCI Regulations. By utilizing an “Acceptance of Consequences” under article 12.6.019, the rider accepted a total 25-day suspension. The one-day penalty previously issued by his team was credited toward this period, resulting in the current ban that suspends the rider for 25 days.
The governing body described the ruling as a fitting punishment for the behavior. In a broader reminder to the cycling community, the UCI emphasized that all license holders must adhere to the Riders’ Charter of Rights and Responsibilities to ensure that sportsmanship, fairness, and respect prevail within the sport.
The suspension following the Ster van Zwolle incident marks a significant setback for the young New Zealander, whose actions were characterized by some reports as those of a “hooligan” on the road.
