WhatsApp Bolsters Account Security with Passkey Integration and Enhanced Encryption
WhatsApp is refining its security architecture by shifting away from traditional passwords in favor of cryptographic Passkeys, a move that aligns with a broader industry trend toward passwordless authentication to reduce vulnerability to unauthorized access.
Passkeys allow users to access their accounts without the necessitate for a PIN or password, instead leveraging the device’s native screen lock or biometric authentication, such as fingerprint scanning. This system utilizes a combination of public and private cryptographic keys to ensure a high level of security while simplifying the login process. To utilize this feature, users must have biometric functions enabled on their mobile devices.
For those looking to lock WhatsApp chats with fingerprints and Passkeys, the setup process is integrated directly into the app’s settings. Users can enable the feature by navigating to Settings, selecting Account, and then choosing Passkeys. After tapping Create a passkey and agreeing to the terms, the user simply selects Use screen lock and verifies their identity via their biometric scanner or security code.
The flexibility of Passkeys extends to device migrations and app reinstalls. If a user reinstalls WhatsApp, the system may prompt them to use an existing passkey during the registration process. Although, if a user wishes to update their security credentials, they must first delete the current passkey before generating a new one.
Beyond authentication, WhatsApp has significantly upgraded how user data is stored. In 2021, Meta introduced end-to-end encryption for chat backups, ensuring that cloud-stored data remains private. Users can secure their WhatsApp data with this encryption by utilizing either a personalized password or a complex 64-character encryption key.
These updates are part of a wider suite of privacy features designed to shield sensitive information. This includes the ability to hide sensitive folders and lock specific chats, as well as tools to monitor linked devices to prevent eavesdropping.
By integrating biometrics and advanced encryption, WhatsApp is strengthening its defense against account hijacking and data breaches, ensuring that user privacy remains central to its ecosystem.
