Samrat Choudhary Set to Become Bihar’s First BJP Chief Minister as Nitish Kumar Resigns
In a historic shift for the region’s political landscape, Samrat Choudhary is preparing to take office as the first Chief Minister of Bihar from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This transition marks a pivotal moment as the BJP seizes control of the state government and the political narrative from its long-term ally.

The move signals the end of the Nitish Kumar era in Bihar, with reports confirming that Kumar has resigned from the position. According to official records, Choudhary is scheduled to assume the role of Chief Minister on April 15, 2026.
The appointment of Samrat Choudhary represents a decisive change in power, as the state prepares for this significant transition of authority.
Choudhary brings extensive administrative experience to the leadership of the state. A veteran politician born in 1968, he has held several high-ranking portfolios within the Bihar government. He previously served as the Deputy Chief Minister and the Minister of Home Affairs. His political ascent includes being elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly from the Tarapur constituency in 2025.
Prior to his elevation to Chief Minister, Choudhary’s tenure in the state government included serving as the Minister of Finance from January 28, 2024, to November 20, 2025, and a period as the Minister of Sport. He also held the position of Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Council from August 24, 2022, to August 20, 2023.
