Latvia’s border with Belarus has seen a sharp rise in attempted illegal crossings in recent days, with authorities reporting hundreds of migrants stopped while trying to enter the country from Belarus.

On Thursday, April 16, 2026, Latvian border guards turned back 103 individuals attempting to cross the frontier illegally, according to official reports. Just two days later, over the weekend of April 18–19, nearly 300 migrants were detained in similar attempts, marking a significant increase in pressure on the Baltic state’s eastern border.

The surge comes amid renewed migration flows from Belarus, where authorities have reportedly facilitated movement toward the EU’s external borders. Latvian officials said most of those intercepted were attempting to enter on foot through forested and rural sections of the frontier, often in small groups.

Similar trends have been observed across the region, with Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia collectively recording over 200,000 denied entry attempts since the crisis began, according to data from the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service cited in November 2025.

Latvia has maintained strict controls along its Belarus border, deploying additional personnel and surveillance equipment to deter crossings. Authorities continue to process those apprehended in accordance with national and EU immigration laws, with most being returned to Belarus.

The uptick in migration attempts underscores ongoing challenges in managing Europe’s eastern frontier, where geopolitical tensions and humanitarian concerns intersect. As seasonal movement patterns shift, border agencies remain on high alert to prevent unauthorized entries while upholding legal obligations.
