Greet Prins, vice-chair of the CDA parliamentary group in the Dutch Senate, has died at age 72 after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The longtime senator remained active in her duties until her final days, participating in a key Senate vote on immigration legislation just days before her passing.
According to official announcements from the Senate and her political party, Prins died peacefully at her home in Nieuwkoop on the night of Friday, April 24, 2026. She had served as a senator for the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) party since June 2019 and, since June 2023, chaired the Senate Committee on Health, Welfare and Sport.
Despite her progressive illness, Prins chose to continue her parliamentary operate as long as possible, conserving her energy during the week to fulfill her responsibilities. Her final appearance in the Senate chamber occurred on Tuesday, April 22, 2026, when she voted against the controversial immigration bill.
Party leaders remembered her as a dedicated public servant whose career was defined by compassion and practical governance. “The idea that you exist not just for yourself, but to serve others, was a guiding principle in her thinking and actions,” the CDA stated in its tribute.
Before her Senate tenure, Prins held leadership roles in the public sector, including serving as chair of the board at Philadelphia Zorg, a healthcare organization for individuals with intellectual disabilities. In 2011, she was honored as Healthcare Manager of the Year for her work there. She also spent many years at the Employee Insurance Agency (UWV).
In recognition of her public service, Prins was knighted in 2010 and received further honors for her contributions to healthcare administration. The Senate announced it will consult with her family and party colleagues to determine an appropriate time for a formal tribute in her honor.
