Chile has deployed its modernized Leopard 2A4 and Marder 1A3 armored vehicles in a tactical exercise involving combat teams, according to official military sources.

The exercise, which took place recently, showcased the upgraded capabilities of both platforms following ongoing modernization efforts. The Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks and Marder 1A3 infantry fighting vehicles have been undergoing enhancements to improve their battlefield effectiveness, with Chile having acquired the Marder 1A3 fleet from Germany starting in 2008, eventually bringing the total to approximately 270 units.

The deployment highlights Chile’s continued investment in maintaining a modern and interoperable armored force, particularly as it integrates upgraded systems across its mechanized units. The tactical drill emphasized coordination between tank and infantry fighting vehicle crews under simulated combat conditions.

Modernization of the Leopard 2A4 fleet is being carried out under the PROACO program, with Turkish defense company Aselsan involved in the upgrades. Aselsan has also been identified as a potential partner for the modernization of the Marder 1A3 vehicles, following discussions initiated between Chile and Türkiye in April 2025.

Israeli defense firm Elbit Systems has been contracted to modernize weapon systems on both the Leopard 2A4 tanks and Marder 1A3 infantry fighting vehicles, further enhancing their combat systems and situational awareness capabilities.

The exercise underscores Chile’s commitment to sustaining a credible defense posture in South America through sustained upgrades and joint training with its armored assets.
