Mercari and Yahoo! Auctions to Ban Resale of McDonald’s Japan ‘Chiikawa’ Collectibles
In a coordinated effort to curb predatory resale practices, Japan’s leading secondary marketplaces, Mercari and Yahoo! Auctions, have announced they will prohibit the listing of upcoming promotional toys from McDonald’s Japan.

The ban specifically targets the “Chiikawa” themed toys included in Happy Set meals, which are scheduled for release on Friday, May 15. By blocking these items, the platforms aim to prevent “scalping” and ensure that the collectibles remain accessible to the general consumer base rather than being diverted to high-priced secondary markets.
This decision follows a strategic move by McDonald’s Japan to implement stricter sales methods and anti-resale measures. The company’s decision to crack down on the secondary market stems from significant troubles and disruptions experienced during similar promotional events in 2025.
The alignment between the retailer and the major e-commerce platforms underscores a growing corporate intolerance for the resale economy surrounding high-demand collectibles. This move reflects a broader trend in the Japanese retail sector to protect brand integrity and customer experience by limiting the influence of professional resellers.
Both Mercari and Yahoo! Auctions have confirmed the prohibition of the “Chiikawa” Happy Set items to support these objectives.
