Abu-Zahra’s legacy is defined by a rare ability to pivot between the benevolent and the sinister, making him a beloved figure for both children and adults. While he was a powerhouse in traditional drama, many younger viewers recognize him as the definitive Arabic voice of Disney’s most iconic antagonists, most notably providing the menacing tones for Scar in The Lion King (1994) and Jafar in Aladdin. These performances are widely regarded as some of the finest voice-acting contributions in the history of Arabic dubbing.

His journey in the arts began at the Higher Institute of Theatrical Arts, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1958. After a brief stint as an employee, he joined the National Theater in 1959, launching a theatrical career that would see him appear in nearly 100 plays. He first shot to prominence in the lead role of The Beginning and the End, a production based on the writings of the legendary Naguib Mahfouz, and later starred in acclaimed works such as Al Mahrousa.

Beyond the stage, Abu-Zahra became a staple of Egyptian cinema and television. He delivered a series of memorable performances in major productions including Al Gezeira, Land of Fear, and The Choice. However, it was his role in the enduringly popular series I Won’t Live in My Father’s Jellabiya (Lan Aeesh fi Gelbab Aby) that cemented his status as a household name, with the performance continuing to resonate with audiences on social media today.

Tributes have poured in from the highest levels of Egyptian society. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi honored the actor’s memory, noting that Abu-Zahra delivered “valuable and distinguished” works throughout his career.

The Musicians Syndicate also expressed its deep grief. Syndicate head Mostafa Kamel, alongside the board and General Assembly, extended their sincerest condolences to the family of the late artist, celebrating a career that left an “indelible mark” on the history of Egyptian art.
