Russian Missile and Drone Barrage Leaves Nine Dead in Kyiv
A massive combined aerial assault by Russian forces on May 14, 2026, has left at least nine people dead in Kyiv, including a 13-year-old child. The strikes, which utilized a mixture of drones and missiles, caused widespread destruction across the Ukrainian capital, sparking fires and collapsing residential structures.
The most severe damage was reported in the Darnytskyi district, where a residential building was destroyed. Search and rescue operations have been intensive, with more than 200 rescuers and heavy machinery deployed to the site. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko confirmed that while 28 residents have been recovered from the wreckage, the search continues for another 20 people still trapped beneath the rubble.
Tymur Tkachenko, Head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, confirmed the rising death toll via Telegram, expressing condolences to the families of the victims as rescuers recovered additional bodies from the debris.
The attack resulted in at least 45 injuries across the city. Early reports indicated that damage was felt across seven different districts, with ballistic and cruise missiles striking multiple targets and causing cars to ignite in the streets.

The assault unfolded in waves throughout the early morning of May 14. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the barrage began around 2:30 a.m. Kyiv time with groups of drones. This was followed by ballistic missile strikes starting at 3:10 a.m. By 3:54 a.m., cruise missiles—likely launched from Tu-160 and Tu-95MS strategic bombers—were detected heading toward the capital. A final series of loud explosions rang out at 6:40 a.m. As ballistic missiles and drones struck the city once more.
This escalation underscores the persistent volatility of the conflict and the ongoing vulnerability of urban centers to high-precision strategic weaponry. Such combined attacks often aim to overwhelm air defense systems through saturation, increasing the risk to civilian populations.
In response to the carnage, Kyiv has declared May 15 a day of mourning. On the diplomatic front, Foreign Minister Sybiha has initiated a meeting of the United Nations Security Council to address the killing of Ukrainian civilians.
