Texas Tech Earns SEC Competition Praise from Former Coach Urban Meyer
Lubbock, TX – Texas Tech University’s football team is generating national buzz, with former Ohio State and Florida coach Urban Meyer stating he believes the Red Raiders could compete in the Southeastern Conference.
Meyer, speaking recently, lauded Texas Tech’s performance this season, currently 5-0 and ranked No. 9 in the latest AP Top 25 poll. “I think they’re certainly a playoff team,” Meyer said. “And what I like — in the SEC, you just go out and size them up… I think they could compete in the SEC. I really do.” This assessment comes as Texas Tech enjoys its best start since 2009, potentially reshaping the landscape of college football recruiting and conference alignment.
The Red Raiders are currently leading the Big 12 in scoring, averaging 48.6 points per game, and have dominated conference opponents with a 69-21 point differential in their first two Big 12 matchups. Quarterback Behren Morton has thrown for over 1,400 yards with 12 touchdowns, supported by a strong running game from Cameron Dickey and J’Koby Williams. Defensively, the team has recorded 12 sacks and 18 pass breakups. Meyer specifically pointed to their performance against Utah, noting they “have the body types, they’ve got speed, they’ve got some depth at quarterback.” You can find more information about the College Football Playoff selection process on the NCAA website.
Texas Tech will host Kansas this weekend before facing a challenging road game against No. 21 Arizona State in Week 8, followed by a November 8th matchup against fellow undefeated Big 12 team BYU. Coaches indicated they will continue to evaluate the team’s progress as the season unfolds.
