October Social Security Payments: Third Wave Arrives This Week Under New Paperless System
The third wave of October Social Security payments will be distributed this week, marking the first full month of benefits delivery under the agency’s new policy requiring direct deposit or the use of Direct Express cards.
Beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st of their birth month are scheduled to receive their monthly benefits on Wednesday, October 22nd. This shift to electronic payments follows an executive order signed in March by former President Donald Trump, aiming to eliminate paper checks from federal disbursements, with a compliance deadline of September 30th.
Generally, Social Security payments are issued on Wednesdays, categorized by birthdate: those born between the 1st and 10th receive payments on the second Wednesday, the 11th to 20th on the third, and those born after the 20th on the fourth. Individuals who began receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997 can expect payment on the third of the month, barring weekend or holiday conflicts. For those receiving both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security is paid on the third, and SSI on the first of the month – learn more about Supplemental Security Income from the Social Security Administration.
Supplemental Security Income checks were initially distributed on October 1st. The change to electronic payments is intended to reduce costs and improve the security of benefit delivery, but has raised concerns among some recipients who preferred paper checks. The Social Security Administration encourages anyone with questions to visit the SSA website for assistance.
The agency will continue to monitor the transition and provide support to beneficiaries as they adjust to the new system.
