Former Bethesda Designer Criticizes Starfield’s Procedural Generation, Calls Space “Inherently Boring”

A former designer at Bethesda Game Studios has publicly stated that Starfield, while a “good game,” doesn’t reach the same heights as the studio’s Fallout and Elder Scrolls franchises due to its heavy reliance on procedurally generated content.

The designer explained that the vastness of space, while ambitious, ultimately led to a sense of repetition, stating, “The planets start to feel very samey.” This reliance on procedural generation, where environments are algorithmically created rather than handcrafted, was a key factor in preventing Starfield from achieving the same level of immersive detail found in Bethesda’s previous titles. The comments were made yesterday, October 21, 2025, and quickly circulated among gaming communities.

“Space is inherently boring,” the former developer reportedly said. “Unless you’re landing on a planet and there’s something very specific there, it’s just…rocks and dirt.” The designer also suggested that if Starfield had been released by a studio other than Bethesda, it might have been received differently, potentially with lower expectations regarding handcrafted content. This critique comes as Bethesda continues to support Starfield with updates and expansions.

The comments highlight an ongoing debate within the gaming industry regarding the trade-offs between scale and depth in open-world games. Procedural generation allows for massive worlds, but can sometimes sacrifice the unique, memorable experiences that come with meticulously designed environments – a hallmark of the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series, as discussed in Gamasutra’s analysis of procedural generation.

Bethesda has not yet issued a formal response to the designer’s statements, but continues to monitor community feedback regarding Starfield.
