Minnesota Duluth Upsets UND with Overtime Goal, Ends Long Losing Streak
GRAND FORKS – Minnesota Duluth defeated the University of North Dakota 4-3 in overtime today, snapping UND’s eight-game winning streak against the Bulldogs and marking their first victory over North Dakota since January 21, 2023.
The game-winning goal came from Ty Hanson just 43 seconds into overtime, assisted by Zam Plante and Max Plante. The Plante brothers dominated the night, each recording four points; Max Plante scored two goals, while Zam Plante had one goal and three assists. UND’s Ollie Josephson scored his first collegiate goal, tying the game late in the third period, but couldn’t prevent the Bulldogs’ comeback.
Minnesota Duluth’s strong offensive performance included a shorthanded goal by Max Plante and a power-play goal, capitalizing on a penalty assessed to UND’s Dylan James. The Bulldogs’ top line has combined for 40 points in just eight games this season, contributing to their impressive 7-1 start – their best record in 36 years. This victory is particularly significant as it shifts the momentum in a rivalry that has heavily favored North Dakota in recent years; college hockey rivalries are often decided by these key matchups. UND Coach Brad Schlossman noted the team’s recent injury to Josh Zakreski, forcing a lineup change, and Gibson Homer’s return to the net after Jan Špunar started last Saturday. Bulldogs officials stated they will focus on maintaining this level of play as they move forward in the season.
