Bulgaria’s government announced a new home renovation program on Tuesday, offering vouchers worth approximately $11,000 USD to homeowners for energy-efficient upgrades. The initiative, funded by a $108 million decarbonization fund, aims to improve the energy efficiency of thousands of single-family homes annually, and could be expanded in the future.

Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov unveiled the program during a visit to Northeastern Bulgaria, where he inspected renovation projects and met with local officials and residents. The program comes as the country seeks to address aging infrastructure and reduce its carbon footprint.

In the town of Tutrakan, Zhelyazkov examined the ongoing stabilization of an apartment building that had sunk more than eight inches into a swamp due to faulty plumbing installed during its original construction. Government intervention led to the building’s reinforcement and improvements to its energy efficiency, officials said.

The Prime Minister also visited the site of a planned ferry line connecting Tutrakan, Bulgaria, with Oltenita, Romania.

The voucher program will cover upgrades including the installation of solar panels, according to a government statement. The $108 million fund is expected to support renovations for several thousand homes each year.
