A major traffic disruption unfolded on the A59 highway in the Netherlands on Monday, February 9, 2026, following two separate incidents involving trucks. The closures caused significant delays for commuters and freight transport, highlighting the vulnerability of key transportation arteries to unexpected events.
The first incident occurred Monday morning when a truck lost its load of granite onto the roadway, prompting an initial closure. Shortly after, a second truck overturned near the Hooipolder interchange, compounding the problem and leading to a complete shutdown of the A59 in both directions.
According to reports, the second truck was carrying diesel fuel. Emergency crews faced a complex operation to right the vehicle and clear the roadway, a process initially expected to be completed by midday. However, the recovery proved more challenging than anticipated, requiring the full removal of the diesel before the truck could be uprighted.
Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch public works agency, initially estimated the A59 would reopen by 9:00 p.m. Local time. The extended closure was necessary due to the complexity of the salvage operation and the hazardous conditions created by spilled fuel, which left the road surface slick.
Fortunately, the driver involved in the second incident was not injured. Earlier in the day, the A59 had already been temporarily closed due to the first truck incident. Rijkswaterstaat provided updates on the situation via social media.
The A59 in the direction of Den Bosch reopened after the initial truck incident was resolved, but the other direction remained closed until late in the evening. Omroep Brabant reported that the highway was fully closed at one point due to the combined effect of the two accidents.
