Rankine’s session was cut short after he felt a grab in his right hamstring although contesting a mark. Crows assistant coach Jack Hombsch provided an update, stating, “He just pulled up a little bit sore. He’s getting assessed as we speak, so we don’t realize too much yet, but hopefully he’s okay at this stage.” Hombsch added the team is “anticipating he will be okay for Friday”’s match simulation against their rivals.

WEDDLE COMMITS FUTURE TO HAWKS

Hawthorn has secured a major win, with breakout star Josh Weddle signing a new four-year deal that will keep him with the club through the 2030 season. The 21-year-old had attracted significant interest, including a reported seven-year, $10 million offer from Essendon, but ultimately chose to remain with the Hawks.

Hawks footy boss Rob McCartney expressed the club’s delight, saying, “We are delighted that Josh has committed his future to Hawthorn, he is an essential part of what we are aspiring to achieve, and we are extremely confident that his best is yet to come.” McCartney highlighted Weddle’s versatility and impact, noting his ability to play multiple positions and “drive the standards required to be at Hawthorn.”

Teammate Jarman Impey previously expressed confidence that Weddle and other key Hawks would remain with the club, even if it meant accepting less lucrative offers to maintain the team’s core.

Weddle missed time last season with a back injury but made a significant impact in Hawthorn’s finals run. He is expected to spend more time in the midfield in 2026, adding another dimension to his already impressive skillset.

NORTH MELBOURNE FACES INJURY CONCERNS

North Melbourne is dealing with injury setbacks as the 2026 season approaches. Colby McKercher had a minor procedure on a cracked finger, but the club expects him to be available for Round 1 against Port Adelaide. Taylor Goad suffered a potential knee/leg injury during Wednesday’s training and is currently being assessed. George Wardlaw (hamstring) is likewise in a race against time to be fit for the season opener.

AFL EXPLORING WOMEN’S REPRESENTATIVE FOOTBALL

The AFL is considering introducing women’s representative football in 2026, with potential formats including a State of Origin clash and an Australia-Ireland contest. Collingwood’s Ash Centra and Western Bulldogs’ Jasmyn Smith both expressed enthusiasm for the idea, highlighting the potential benefits for player development and the growing popularity of the AFLW.
