AI-Generated ‘Miracle’ Weight Loss Videos Target Instagram Users
Artificial intelligence is being leveraged to create deceptive weight loss testimonials on Instagram, using manipulated videos to sell “miracle” health programs to unsuspecting users. These AI-driven scams utilize highly realistic “before and after” footage to fabricate success stories that are physically impossible within the claimed timeframes.
In one prominent example, an Instagram account operating under the handle health.instructor features a woman claiming to have dropped from 100 to 52 kilograms in just four months. The account encourages viewers to click a link to “attempt the same fun and effective program.” However, a closer inspection of the footage reveals significant inconsistencies. Despite the videos being presented as having been filmed in June and December 2025, the environment remains identical: the lighting is unchanged and the same jacket and bag are positioned in the exact same spots in the background.
The technical deception was confirmed using Google’s SynthID, a detection tool designed to identify AI-generated content through an invisible watermark. The tool successfully detected this watermark on the video, verifying that the content had been manipulated using Google AI. This development highlights the growing tension between AI-generated misinformation and the tools being developed by Big Tech to maintain digital authenticity.
These deceptive campaigns often employ a pattern of recycling content. The same fake testimonials frequently appear across multiple different accounts, each promoting a different weight loss method, such as “fat burners” or “ketogenic diets,” as evidenced by reverse image searches.
The origin of these clips is often rooted in reality, though they are stripped of their original context. An investigation by the AFP found that some of these sequences are actually authentic recordings of real people—including American influencer Gabi Fuller—that have been stolen and repurposed to serve as fake evidence for these weight loss schemes.
