AirPods Max 2 represent a new generation of Apple’s over-ear headphones, arriving more than five years after the original model launched in December 2020. Apple is largely maintaining the same design aesthetic as its predecessor.

This means the key improvements are primarily internal.

The most significant upgrade is the inclusion of Apple’s H2 chip. This is the same system-on-a-chip that has powered enhanced smart audio features in newer AirPods models, and in the AirPods Max 2, it’s being leveraged to improve audio processing, noise cancellation, and call quality. Apple claims the active noise cancellation is up to 1.5 times more effective than the previous generation.

The AirPods Max 2 will offer real-time translation, allowing users to hear translated speech directly in their headphones.

The headphones also introduce Conversation Awareness, which automatically lowers the volume when someone speaks to you, and Voice Isolation, designed to deliver clearer call audio.

Adaptive Audio and Personalized Volume are included, features that dynamically adjust the sound based on the surrounding environment and user listening habits.

Improved Sound Quality

On the audio side, Apple has upgraded the hardware with a high dynamic range amplifier. The company says this will deliver richer bass, more natural vocals, and clearer instrument separation in the soundstage.

AirPods Max 2 also support 24-bit/48 kHz lossless audio via USB-C cable, addressing one of the shortcomings of the previous model.

Other new features include the ability to control Siri with head gestures and to use the Digital Crown as a remote shutter for the iPhone or iPad.

Battery life remains at 20 hours, and the suggested retail price is around $549.
