Apple on Monday unveiled the AirPods Max 2, the latest iteration of its over-ear headphones, featuring significantly improved noise cancellation and new features previously introduced in the AirPods Pro line.
The new AirPods Max 2 boast active noise cancellation 1.5 times more effective than the original model, which debuted in late 2020, Apple announced in a press release. A minor refresh of the AirPods Max with a USB-C connector and lossless audio via cable arrived in 2024.
Priced at $549, the headphones maintain the same price point as their predecessor and will be available for pre-order starting March 25. Shipments of the AirPods Max 2 are expected to commence in early April. Apple will offer the headphones in five colors: blue, purple, orange, midnight, and starlight (pale gold).

The update includes Apple’s latest H2 chip, enabling features like live translation and conversation awareness, which lowers audio volume when the user is speaking. AirPods Max 2 too introduce Adaptive Audio, which dynamically adjusts the noise cancellation level to suit the surrounding environment. This move demonstrates Apple’s commitment to integrating advanced computational audio across its product lines.
The reduction of loud sounds – a feature carried over from the AirPods Pro series – remains a key benefit, reducing the intensity of sirens, construction noise, and other jarring sounds.
Apple has also enhanced the microphones in the AirPods Max 2 to deliver “studio-quality audio recording” and reduced wireless latency for improved performance during gaming.
The announcement follows a wave of new product releases from Apple earlier this month, including the iPhone 17e, the $599 MacBook Neo, and the new Studio Display XDR, alongside updated versions of the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iPad Air, and Studio Display.
“With the incredible performance of H2, AirPods Max are upgraded with up to 1.5x more effective ANC for the ultimate all-day listening experience,” said Eric Treski, Apple’s director of Audio Product Marketing. “The sound quality is remarkably clean, rich, and acoustically detailed — and when combined with capabilities like Personalized Spatial Audio, AirPods Max 2 deliver a profoundly immersive experience.”
