Nearly 50,000 customers in Ålesund, Norway, were left without power on Wednesday, March 12, 2026, in a widespread outage that impacted both the city center and surrounding areas. The incident highlights the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to disruptions, particularly in regions prone to inclement weather.

According to reports from the power company Linja, the outage began around 9:02 AM local time. Initial statements indicated that the entire city of Ålesund was affected. “Hele Ålesund strømløs. Vi jobber med saken,” the company stated.

While power was restored to many areas by approximately 9:00 AM, 6,188 customers remained without electricity as of 10:39 AM. The outage also briefly affected the neighboring municipalities of Giske, and Sula.

The cause of the large-scale disruption is currently under investigation. Similar power outages have occurred in the region previously, particularly during the winter months when strong winds and severe weather can damage the power grid, as noted by Conflingo.

Linja reported that power was fully restored to all affected customers shortly after the initial reports, though the initial impact was significant. Nettavisen and NRK both covered the event as it unfolded.

The swift restoration of power prevented a potentially prolonged disruption to residents and businesses in the affected areas. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of resilient power infrastructure and rapid response capabilities in mitigating the impact of outages.
