Schreuder Joins Nagelsmann’s Germany Coaching Staff Ahead of World Cup
Former Hoffenheim head coach Alfred Schreuder will serve as an assistant coach for the German national team as they prepare for the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup this summer. The German Football Association confirmed the appointment on Monday, March 10, 2026.
Schreuder will join the team for their upcoming friendly matches against Switzerland and Ghana, scheduled for the end of March and will remain with the squad through the conclusion of the tournament. This appointment adds further depth to Julian Nagelsmann’s coaching staff as Germany looks to make a strong showing in the competition.
The 53-year-vintage is no stranger to Nagelsmann, having previously worked as his assistant at Hoffenheim. “I had a very trusting and successful working relationship with Julian Nagelsmann at Hoffenheim,” Schreuder said. “As a young coach, I was impressed by his courage, ambition, and expertise. We’ve always stayed in good contact since then. It’s a great honour for me that Julian and his team asked me to support them at the World Cup.”
Schreuder’s recent coaching experience includes a stint with Club Brugge, where he won the Belgian Pro League title in 2022, and a brief period at Ajax. He is currently under contract with Saudi Arabian club Al-Diriyah. His addition to the German setup allows set-piece coach Mads Buttgereit to focus solely on set-piece training, a key area Nagelsmann has identified as crucial for success, according to the DFB.
Prior to his time at Hoffenheim, Schreuder also served as a coach at Barcelona during their Spanish Cup triumph in 2021, adding another layer of experience to the German national team’s technical staff. FCUpdate.nl reports that Schreuder’s family has already received a Germany shirt from Dutch coach Ronald Koeman.
The German national team is currently undergoing preparations for the first-ever 48-team FIFA World Cup, and this appointment is seen as a strategic move to bolster their chances of success. Bundesliga.com notes that Schreuder’s experience and familiarity with Nagelsmann will be invaluable as they navigate the challenges of the tournament.
