A shakeup is underway at Liga 1’s Alianza Lima despite the team’s strong start to the Torneo Apertura. Currently tied for the league lead with Los Chankas at 20 points through eight matches, the club is navigating a change in leadership.

What prompted the head of the club’s administration to step down during a period of success? Here’s a breakdown of the situation and the leadership transition at the historic club.
The first meeting of the Creditors’ Committee was held this Monday, February 13th. Notably absent was Jorge Zúñiga, the president of Aliancistas por el Perú – the investment group that acquired the Fondo Blanquiazul’s outstanding debts – or any representative from his legal firm, a departure from his usual attendance. Representatives from SUNAT and other creditors were present, according to reports.
Zúñiga has decided to step down from his position as president. The change will be formalized at a second meeting of the Creditors’ Committee scheduled for Thursday, March 26th.
Alongside the official announcement of Zúñiga’s departure, Fernando Cabada, Alianza Lima’s current administrator, will also be present on Thursday, March 26th. Cabada is expected to present the club’s financial report for 2025.

According to journalist José Varela, Zúñiga’s decision stems from a growing disconnect with the sporting side of the club. Those close to him encouraged him to step aside. “I haven’t been informed about what’s happening at the club since January. I don’t know coach Pablo Guede, but I follow all the matches. My information is the same as any fan through the media,” he recently stated.
Zúñiga’s message was clear: he has lost close contact with the first team, a situation that was different in the past. He frequently traveled with the squad to international matches last year.
On Wednesday night, Fondo Aliancistas del Perú announced to the press that Luis Felipe Bravo García will be the fresh president. Bravo García is a corporate lawyer with experience as president of the Working Group for the Peruvian Sports Federation of Basketball at the IPD. He also holds degrees from the universities of Yale and Salamanca. Zúñiga will not be selling his shares, but simply relinquishing the presidency.
Zúñiga has been the public face of Aliancistas por el Perú, maintaining an active presence on social media. However, his departure does not signify the group’s exit from Alianza Lima. Reports indicate that everything will continue as planned, with Luis Felipe Bravo García taking the helm.
