Tragedy at Estadio Matute: One Dead and Dozens Injured During Alianza Lima Celebration
A celebratory “banderazo” for Alianza Lima turned into a scene of chaos at Estadio Matute in Peru, leaving one person dead and numerous fans injured. What was intended to be a passionate rally for the club ended in disaster when a tragedy during the Alianza Lima fan rally claimed the life of one supporter.
The devastating incident at Estadio Matute occurred in the stadium’s south stand. While reports on the total number of casualties vary, officials have confirmed one fatality and between 47 and 60 injuries.
The cause of the disaster was the collapse of a structure in the Peruvian stadium, which sent fans tumbling. The structural failure in the south stand triggered a wave of panic among the crowd, resulting in a death and nearly 50 injuries.
