Vargas Llosa Warns of ‘Danger’ from Left-Wing Candidates in Peru’s 2026 Election

Political analyst and writer Álvaro Vargas Llosa has characterized Peru’s ongoing political instability as a direct consequence of the election of former President Pedro Castillo. Speaking on March 30, 2026, Vargas Llosa asserted that the left has caused significant harm to the nation, noting that the current crisis is rooted in the victory of Castillo, who is currently imprisoned.

This assessment highlights the deep-seated political volatility and polarization that continue to challenge governance in Peru, a situation that reflects broader trends of democratic instability across Latin America.

During a recent analysis of Peru’s political crisis, economy, and the 2026 elections, Vargas Llosa described the left as lacking a modern or liberal approach. He specifically identified the presidential candidacy of Roberto Sánchez, representing Juntos por el Perú, as an “enormous danger” and expressed hope that Sánchez would not secure significant support from voters. He similarly labeled the candidacy of Alfonso López Chau as a “danger” to the country.

Despite these concerns, Vargas Llosa believes it is highly improbable that any left-wing candidate will reach the second round of the upcoming election.

Reflecting on the overall difficulty of leading the country amidst such turmoil, Vargas Llosa remarked that one must be crazy to want to be president of Peru, emphasizing the extreme pressures associated with the office.
