Amy Poehler Addresses AI Threat to Hollywood in SNL Monologue
Amy Poehler used her opening monologue on Saturday Night Live yesterday to address growing concerns within the entertainment industry regarding the potential displacement of actors and writers by artificial intelligence.
Poehler, marking the 50th anniversary of the show’s premiere, began by acknowledging challenging times for the industry. She then directly addressed AI, stating, “To that little AI robot watching TV right now who wants to be on this stage someday, I say to you be boop be boop be boop … which translates to, you’ll never be able to write a joke, you stupid robot!” She also referenced the possibility of AI actresses, joking about being willing to perform “full frontal but nobody asked me.”
The monologue followed a week of increasing scrutiny of OpenAI’s video-generating capabilities, with talent agencies and the Motion Picture Association (MPA) voicing concerns. Actor Sean Astin of SAG-AFTRA also publicly criticized the technology. The rise of AI in creative fields has sparked debate about copyright, artistic integrity, and the future of employment for entertainment professionals.
Poehler also paid tribute to the show’s history, noting that the first episode aired 50 years ago today and was hosted by George Carlin, adding, “just like George Carlin I am extremely high.” SNL’s longevity is a testament to its ability to adapt and remain relevant in a rapidly changing media landscape.
Representatives from SAG-AFTRA have stated they will continue to monitor developments in AI and advocate for protections for their members.
