Blake Fielder-Civil, the ex-husband of the late Amy Winehouse, is speaking out about the long-held belief that he introduced the singer to heavier drug use. Their tumultuous relationship, which began around 2005 in a London pub, was marked by passion, partying, and addiction.
The pair married in 2007 and divorced in 2009, but many fans have continued to blame Fielder-Civil for Winehouse’s downward spiral and tragic death.
“I understand that a lot of people, especially people who followed the media 20 years ago, still think that Amy’s death was my fault. If I felt that way, I would admit it,” Fielder-Civil said in a recent podcast interview with People. “But Amy had her own will. She was a very strong woman and she did what she wanted to do, even if she knew it was bad for her.”
Now 43, Fielder-Civil acknowledged his public image but pushed back against bearing sole responsibility for Winehouse’s struggles. He explained that their shared issues with substance use developed over time. “When we met, we weren’t addicts. We became addicts together,” he stated.

Winehouse died on July 23, 2011, from alcohol poisoning, a coroner determined at the time. No illegal substances were found in her system. She was 27 years old.
Fielder-Civil learned of her death although incarcerated, serving time for theft. “My worst nightmare came true. I just burst into tears,” he recalled.
He said the most difficult part was being unable to say goodbye and grieving in isolation while the media “lynched” him.
Fielder-Civil now says he is sober and rebuilding his life. He concluded the interview by saying he believes Winehouse wouldn’t want him to carry all the blame for their shared past.
“We were just young, addicted people. It can happen to anyone. I would never say she was bad. But I know she wouldn’t want me sitting here saying it’s all my fault. She’d be like, ‘Get it right, darling. Come on, tell them the truth,’” he added.
