Ann Van Elsen Fined for Cellphone Use Behind the Wheel

Former Miss Belgium Ann Van Elsen received a 15-day driving ban and a €240 fine after appearing in court on February 26, 2026, for using her cellphone while driving. The incident occurred in Ghent, Belgium, as she was on her way to pick up her children.

According to reports, Van Elsen was attempting to answer a call regarding a washing machine delivery when she placed her phone on her lap as the car’s Bluetooth system wasn’t functioning. “I realize my mistake and accept my punishment,” Van Elsen reportedly said in court. “I thought it was important to be here myself and offer my apologies.”

The judge acknowledged Van Elsen’s remorse and did not impose any additional driving restrictions, but did uphold the fine. The 15-day suspension is expected to present logistical challenges for the actress and presenter, given her busy family life.

This case is part of a growing trend of public figures in Belgium facing traffic violations. Zita Wauters and Daan Stuyven have recently been cited for driving under the influence, and Tom Waes faced legal consequences following a traffic accident. Ruben Van Gucht has also accumulated a series of fines and driving bans over the past year.

Van Elsen described the court experience as “very intimidating” in a February 24, 2026, interview. The incident serves as a reminder that even a momentary lapse in attention can have legal repercussions, even for well-known personalities.

The case has sparked conversation about traffic regulations and celebrity accountability, adding to a broader discussion about responsible driving in the region.
