A 34-year-classic singer-songwriter from Colorado is now reliant on a wheelchair after experiencing debilitating symptoms following a common antibiotic prescription, according to reports from The Sun.
Kylie Woodland began experiencing muscle spasms, insomnia, and fatigue shortly after being prescribed ciprofloxacin in 2019 to prevent stomach pain. At the time, she didn’t connect her symptoms to the antibiotic, and they continued intermittently for several years.
Approximately six years later, severe pain developed in her hips and legs. Initially believing it to be a disc issue, Woodland took nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Within hours, her condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to symptoms resembling complete paralysis and excruciating pain.
Woodland subsequently experienced burning sensations in her tendons and nerves, joint swelling, and fainting spells with even minimal movement, ultimately confining her to a bed and wheelchair. This case highlights the potential for unexpected and severe adverse reactions to commonly prescribed medications.
Whereas researching her symptoms, Woodland discovered information about “Floxing,” a term used to describe toxicity associated with fluoroquinolone antibiotics, similar to the one she had taken. She consulted a specialist who suggested the antibiotic may have impacted cells within her body.
Woodland is currently undergoing regenerative and physical rehabilitation, and her condition has reportedly shown some improvement. Ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, is known for its potent antibacterial effects, but it has also been linked to rare, yet serious, side effects.
This case underscores the importance of being aware of potential side effects of antibiotics and discussing any concerning symptoms with a healthcare provider.
