A woman was left speechless after discovering the true value of her father’s watch on the Swedish television program “Antikrundan,” which translates to “Antique Roadshow.”
The owner of the luxury timepiece appeared stunned when an expert revealed its worth during a recent episode of the long-running SVT show. “I’m completely speechless, actually,” she exclaimed on air, according to reports.
The watch, a Nautilus model from the Swiss luxury brand Patek Philippe, was originally purchased directly from Philippe Stern, a friend of the woman’s father during the family’s years living in Geneva, Switzerland. The Nautilus is considered one of the first exclusive sports watches and was designed by Gérald Genta, a highly prestigious figure in watch design history.
Clock expert Mikael Wallhagen explained that while prices for the model peaked around 2021-2022, the current market value remains substantial. “But if you were to buy this back on the market today, you’d probably have to reckon with paying 600,000 [Swedish krona],” he said. That figure translates to roughly $57,000 USD, a significant sum that clearly took the owner by surprise.
Overcome with emotion, the woman shared her plans to celebrate the discovery. “Hopefully we can get home to Systembolaget [the Swedish alcohol retailer] before they close,” she joked.
The revelation on “Antikrundan” highlights the enduring appeal of vintage luxury items and the potential for unexpected treasures hidden in family heirlooms. The show, which premiered in 1989, continues to be a popular fixture in Swedish television, mirroring the success of its British counterpart, “Antiques Roadshow.”
While this particular find was valued at around $57,000, other episodes of “Antiques Roadshow” have uncovered items worth millions. In a recent British episode, a pair was shocked to learn their family medal was worth 3.2 million Swedish krona, or approximately $305,000, according to Nyheter24.
The emotional reactions of participants, like the woman left “speechless” by her watch’s value, are a key part of the show’s appeal, offering a captivating glimpse into personal stories and the fascinating world of antiques. Expressen reported on the recent surprise.
