Aparjods 4th, Bērziņš 10th in Olympic Luge – Latvia’s Results

Latvian luger Kristers Aparjods finished fourth at the Cortina d’Ampezzo Olympic Games on Sunday, while Gints Bērziņš placed tenth.

Max Langenhan of Germany claimed the gold medal, with Austria’s Jonas Müller and Italy’s Dominik Fischnaller rounding out the podium.

Langenhan was untouchable throughout all four heats, finishing 0.596 seconds ahead of Müller, and 0.934 seconds clear of Fischnaller. Müller was second in all four runs, while Fischnaller consistently placed third.

Aparjods trailed the winner by 1.421 seconds, finishing just 0.487 seconds off the medal pace. He recorded a fourth-place finish in the first, second, and fourth heats, but a seventh-place result in the third run, following a difficult start, hampered his bid for a medal.

According to competition rules, the Latvian athlete is set to receive approximately €30,700 for his fourth-place finish.

Austrian Nico Gleirscher finished fifth, 0.361 seconds behind Aparjods, and Germany’s Felix Loch completed the top six.

Bērziņš finished 2.852 seconds behind the champion across the four heats. The Latvian was tenth in the first run, ninth in the next two, and climbed to that position but a 17th-place finish in the final heat dropped him back to tenth.

Four years ago, at the Beijing Olympics, Aparjods finished fifth and Bērziņš seventh.

Latvia is represented by a record-breaking delegation of 68 athletes at the 25th Winter Olympic Games in history. Latvian athletes will compete in nine different sports.

The Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo Olympic Games will continue through February 22.
