Apple Maps Ads: New Ads Coming This Summer?

Apple is reportedly preparing to introduce advertisements into another of its native applications, following a recent announcement of increased advertising within the App Store.

For years, iPhone users have taken pride in the relatively ad-free experience within Apple’s ecosystem – aside from the App Store. Intrusive advertisements within a manufacturer’s core apps are often seen as a detriment to the user experience.

A restrained approach to advertising can even be considered a hallmark of a premium experience. For example, within the Xiaomi ecosystem, advertisements vary depending on the product line, but there’s a straightforward way to remove them.

Yet, Apple appears to be reconsidering this philosophy. In December, the company announced the introduction of new ad placements within the App Store, and now another native iOS application is poised to follow suit. This shift reflects a broader trend among tech companies seeking to diversify revenue streams.

Advertising Could Arrive in Apple Maps as Early as This Summer

The application in question is Maps. This news won’t surprise those who have been following the story: back in October, reports suggested that Apple might introduce advertising into its native navigation app as early as 2026. Now, the timeline is becoming clearer.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is the source of this information. According to Gurman, as relayed by 9to5Mac, Apple “is preparing to introduce advertising into its Maps application, as part of a broader initiative to generate more revenue from its services.”

He anticipates a similar auction-based system to the App Store’s ad placements, and broadly mirroring that of Google Maps. Apple could build an announcement as early as this month (March 2026), with advertising potentially rolling out in Maps “as early as this summer” across the company’s various products and the web version of the application.

Beyond advertising, the company is also working to improve the Maps application itself. With iOS 26, Apple began rolling out two new features: favorite routes and a visited places tracker. The former allows Maps – which learns your preferred route – to alert you and suggest an alternative in case of traffic difficulties; the latter lets you log the places you’ve visited and share them with contacts.
