Apple is increasing scrutiny of applications in the App Store that feature AI-powered coding capabilities, effectively blocking rapid app creation outside of the standard App Store review process. The rise of AI coding has enabled individuals without traditional programming skills to build applications using artificial intelligence.
Apple Pauses Updates for Some AI Coding Apps
According to a report, Apple has prevented coding applications like Replit and Vibecode from receiving updates in the App Store. The move is described as temporary, with Apple requesting modifications from these applications. Sources indicate that approval from the App Store is nearing as the apps agree to adjustments, which may include updating preview screens for AI coding features or removing functionality specifically designed to create applications for Apple devices. While some interpret this as a measure to protect App Store revenue, the underlying reasons are more nuanced.
Distinguishing AI-Assisted Development from Audit Bypass
AI coding allows users to generate code and applications through natural language prompts and AI chatbots. Users can describe the desired application and its functions, and the AI service will build and modify the app accordingly. Apple explicitly supports AI-assisted development within established development environments like Xcode, having recently enhanced AI Agent capabilities in an Xcode 26.3 update to make simple app creation more accessible to those without coding knowledge. However, Apple’s recent scrutiny targets apps in the App Store that offer AI coding capabilities, enabling the creation of applications that bypass the standard App Store review process. The report likewise notes that some similar applications, such as Vercel’s v0, have not faced the same restrictions.
Bypassing the App Store Review Process is a Key Concern
The report primarily attributes the issue to competition and revenue protection. Apple could potentially lose revenue from software created by these AI coding applications that isn’t sold through the App Store, particularly the standard 30% commission. Apple’s protective stance regarding its revenue has been evident in its battles with European regulators over the Digital Markets Act. However, the core issue centers on these applications circumventing the App Store’s review process entirely. According to App Store Review Guideline 2.5.2, apps must be self-contained and cannot install or run code that adds or changes the functionality of the app or other apps.
This essentially prohibits apps from creating secondary, independent applications on iPhones or iPads. An Apple spokesperson stated that the enforcement is intended to prevent apps from fundamentally changing their functionality without review. While Apple permits AI coding as a method for building applications, AI coding becomes problematic when these applications completely bypass the review process and potentially pose a threat to its secure platform.
