Arab League Considers Joint Response to Iranian Attacks
Foreign ministers from the 22 member states of the Arab League convened Sunday in an emergency videoconference to coordinate a response following recent Iranian missile and drone attacks on Arab Gulf countries. The meeting was called at the request of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Egypt, and Jordan, “in light of Iranian aggression against Gulf states,” according to Arab League Deputy Secretary-General Hossam Zaki at the start of the meeting.
Zaki indicated that “this conference provides a framework for a unified Arab approach to attacks against Arab countries,” emphasizing that the Iranian attacks “took its neighbors by surprise.” Several nations, including Oman and Qatar, “had made clear efforts” to mediate between Tehran and the United States and “spare Iran and the region the horrors of this war.”
