Argentina has begun integrating 24 F-16 fighter jets purchased from Denmark, a move intended to restore supersonic capability to its air force after decades without it. The acquisition, however, has sparked debate regarding the aircraft’s remaining lifespan and modernization needs. The arrival of the F-16s marks a significant moment for Argentina, which has been working to rebuild its military capabilities.
The first six of the F-16s have already arrived, with the remainder scheduled for delivery by 2028. Argentina is receiving the aircraft in batches due to limitations in its current infrastructure, and the planes will be temporarily stationed in Río Cuarto until facilities at the Tandil air base are completed.
Defense Minister Luis Petri addressed criticism surrounding the purchase, stating, “What matters about the plane are the remaining hours it has and the modernizations it has received.” He added, “These planes that we have received have at least 25 years of flight hours remaining.”
