Liverpool advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals, defeating Galatasaray 4-0 in the second leg of their round-of-16 tie on Wednesday, overturning a 1-0 first-leg deficit. Manager Arne Slot lauded his team’s performance as one of their best of the season, praising both the players and the electric atmosphere created by the Anfield crowd.
Speaking at a post-match press conference, Slot described the victory as a significant step forward for Liverpool in this year’s competition. “From start to finish, I think we played the game I was hoping for, the players were hoping for and I was hoping for,” Slot said. “Not only did we play the perfect game from start to finish but our fans did as well.”
The Reds’ dominant display included goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, Hugo Ekitike, Ryan Gravenberch and Mohamed Salah, who became the first African player to score 50 goals in the Champions League. The win marked a strong response after a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, which had drawn criticism from supporters.
“Our fans reacted great to that and our players kept on going. There was a great dynamic between fans and players and almost the perfect game from us and definitely from our fans,” Slot added. He emphasized the importance of the Anfield atmosphere, noting it surpassed even the fervent support Galatasaray received in Istanbul. “Taraftarımıza çok minnettarız [We are very grateful to our fans],” Slot stated, acknowledging the impact of the home crowd.
Slot also highlighted his team’s defensive solidity against Galatasaray’s attacking approach. “Galatasaray uzun toplar kullandı ama çok iyi savunduk [Galatasaray used long balls but we defended very well],” he explained. “We controlled the game and were able to create numerous scoring opportunities.”
The Liverpool manager acknowledged that Victor Osimhen’s early injury impacted the game, stating, “Osimhen inanılmaz bir oyuncu [Osimhen is an incredible player]. Sakatlanarak çıkması bizim işimize yaradı [His injury helped us].” He added, “It’s never nice to spot a player get injured, but he was a key threat for Galatasaray.”
Looking ahead, Liverpool will face Paris Saint-Germain in the quarterfinals, a repeat of a challenging tie from last season. “Çeyrek finalde PSG gibi bir takımla karşılaşacağız [We will face a team like PSG in the quarterfinals],” Slot said. “We had hard matches against them last season.”
Slot tempered expectations for repeating such a dominant performance consistently, saying, “İnsanları hayal kırıklığına uğratmak istemiyorum ama bu performansı tekrarlamak zor olacak [I don’t want to disappoint people, but it will be difficult to repeat this performance].” Nevertheless, the convincing victory provides a significant boost as Liverpool continues its pursuit of success in both the Champions League and the Premier League.
