Arsenal delivered a dominant performance Sunday, crushing Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 in a thrilling North London Derby and solidifying their position at the top of the Premier League table. A hat trick from Eddie Nketiah powered the Gunners to a decisive victory.
Leandro Trossard opened the scoring for Arsenal in the 36th minute at the Emirates Stadium, before Nketiah added two quick goals in the 41st and 46th minutes. The Gunners’ relentless attack proved too much for their rivals.
Richarlison pulled one back for Tottenham in the 55th minute with a stunning strike, but Nketiah completed his hat trick in the 76th minute, sealing the win for Arsenal and cementing his status as the hero of the match. The result marks a return to winning form for Arsenal after a recent stumble before the international break.
This commanding victory provides a significant boost for Arsenal as they prepare for a crucial Champions League clash against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
With nine wins, two draws, and only one loss this season, Arsenal now boasts 29 points, extending their lead to six points over second-place Chelsea, whom they will face at Stamford Bridge in the next league fixture.
“I enjoyed every minute of the match,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta told Sky Sports after the game. “The preparation since the players came back from international duty, the enthusiasm, the joy, and the desire to win were fantastic. And when we play our way and perform like this, and score the goals we did against our opponents, it always makes for a very special day.”
Arteta continued, “We certainly wanted to impose ourselves, but it starts with the energy and the duels. They are a very good team, and we had to earn this win tonight. We started the game with a lot of intensity and created a big chance with Declan early on, and we had to be patient.”
“We controlled the game completely in the first half, and then in the second half, we maintained our level,” Arteta stated, according to the BBC. “There are aspects we need to improve, but the performance was excellent.”
Arteta also revealed his team’s preparation for the match: “We prepared for [playing with five defenders], and obviously, we didn’t know. Once we had the lineup, we made the right decision, and the players performed exceptionally well.”
“We tried to understand how they were thinking and what we believed they were capable of doing. Our job is to prepare and then simplify the game plan as much as possible. Then the players have to execute, and they did that today.”
Addressing the summer signing of Nketiah, Arteta said, “We got the news, and we had the opportunity to bring in new players, and the fans were very supportive.”
“Andrea [Orta] played a key role in that as well. We now have Gabriel, Kai Havertz, Viktor Gyokeres, Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus, and Martin Odegaard returning, and Nuno Madueke is back too; so thankfully, we have a lot of options.”
