FETSUND – Asak Miljøstein AS will close its production facility in Fetsund, Norway, impacting seven employees, the company announced Tuesday, March 24, 2026. The decision comes as the building materials sector faces ongoing challenges, and overcapacity.
“It is terribly sad that we have to do this,” said Hanne Sønsteby, CEO of Asak Miljøstein AS. “This was not an uncomplicated decision to make.”
Seven Employees Affected
The company has experienced overcapacity at all five of its factories for the past two years due to difficulties in the construction industry. Production will be consolidated at the Hønefoss facility, according to the announcement.
Two employees will transition to administrative roles at the company’s Olavsgaard headquarters. The remaining five will be offered positions at other Asak Miljøstein locations in Kristiansand, Bodø, or Hønefoss, though Sønsteby acknowledged that relocating may not be feasible for all affected workers in the Romerike region.
Sønsteby expressed regret over the job losses, praising the Fetsund employees for their “formidable job” in both production and innovation.
The closure marks the conclude of over a century of industrial history in Fetsund, where Kristiansand Cementstøberi first established a production facility in 1916, initially as a sand business before expanding into concrete products. Today, the plant produces paving stones, slabs, and wall elements.
Long History at Fetsund
Sønsteby stated that the long history of the site also made the decision difficult. The move underscores the demand for companies to prioritize efficiency in a challenging economic climate.
“But we must think efficiency,” she said.
Production at the Fetsund facility will continue through June, after which the plant will be dismantled.
