Ascoli Piceno, Italy – A family of four from Castel di Lama is currently under medical evaluation at the Mazzoni Hospital in Ascoli Piceno following a suspected foodborne illness. The family began experiencing symptoms after consuming a salmon-based product – believed to be a mousse – purchased from a Eurospin discount store.
The product has since been recalled by Eurospin due to concerns about the potential presence of botulinum toxin. The Italian Ministry of Health issued a warning stating a “possible presence of clostridia producing botulinic toxins” and advising consumers not to consume the product and return it to the point of purchase.
Family Experiencing Gastrointestinal Symptoms
The four family members – a father, mother, and two young children – are all experiencing similar symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea, and severe abdominal pain. The mother reportedly suspected food poisoning after learning of the product recall through news reports.
The Mazzoni Hospital in Ascoli Piceno is providing care to the family.
The family contacted emergency services and was transported to the Mazzoni Hospital, where they are undergoing testing to determine if their symptoms are related to the presence of botulinum spores. Foodborne botulism is a serious illness that can cause paralysis and, in severe cases, death.
Hospital staff have consulted with the anti-poison center in Bergamo, which advised contacting the Italian Ministry of Health. If the tests confirm the presence of botulinum toxin, arrangements are being made to transport the antivenom from Rome to the hospital in Ascoli Piceno for immediate administration to the family.
This is a developing story…
