ASUS ROG Ally X: Auto SR Boosts Performance with AI – Microsoft Update

Microsoft announced that next month it will roll out an “Auto Super Resolution” (Auto SR) feature for the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X handheld gaming device. The new capability leverages artificial intelligence to significantly boost performance while maintaining game clarity, offering a smoother experience for handheld gamers.

The core logic of Auto SR is similar to Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR, all of which balance image quality and frame rates by initially rendering games at a lower resolution and then using technology to upscale the image to a higher resolution. When enabled, the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) within the ROG Xbox Ally X’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor activates, upscaling games from resolutions like 720p to 1080p or higher in real-time. Testing shows the feature can improve game performance by up to 30%.

Auto SR offers a fundamental advantage over DLSS, and FSR. Traditional upscaling technologies require specific integration and adaptation by game developers, while Auto SR operates at the operating system level, eliminating the need for individual game support. This broader compatibility means it can work with a larger range of titles. The integration of AI-powered upscaling into handheld gaming represents a significant step toward enhancing the portable gaming experience.

But, the feature has usage limitations. According to Microsoft documentation, Auto SR only supports games built on DX11 and DX12 architectures, with older DX9 games currently unsupported. Due to its reliance on NPU hardware support, the base Xbox Ally handheld cannot enable Auto SR; the feature will be exclusive to the ROG Xbox Ally X.

The launch of Auto SR is another example of AI technology being applied to the handheld gaming space. By leveraging the processing power of NPUs and system-level optimizations, the ROG Xbox Ally X can unlock more performance without sacrificing visual quality, potentially driving further upgrades to handheld gaming devices. The ROG Xbox Ally X boasts an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, a 120Hz display, and Xbox integration for a seamless AAA gaming experience (Microsoft). It comes equipped with 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, while the standard ROG Xbox Ally features 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.
