Audi F1 has been dealt a significant blow as team principal Jonathan Wheatley has departed the organization with immediate effect. The unexpected move comes as Audi prepares to transition into a full factory team, throwing a degree of uncertainty into their plans.
According to a team statement, Wheatley’s departure is due to “personal reasons.” Audi has thanked him for his service, but the timing is far from ideal as the team builds toward its future in Formula 1. Mattia Binotto, currently head of the Audi F1 project, will take on the additional responsibilities of team principal in the interim.
Audi is now actively searching for a permanent team principal to avoid Binotto being stretched too thin with dual roles. Finding the right candidate, but, is expected to be a challenging process.
Speculation is already swirling about Wheatley’s next move, with Aston Martin emerging as a potential destination. Reports suggest he could fill a leadership role with the team, potentially in place of Adrian Newey. Newey’s future has been the subject of intense discussion, with suggestions he may return to focusing solely on technical aspects.
Aston Martin initially denied reports regarding Newey’s potential shift in responsibilities, but denials in Formula 1 are often met with skepticism. Notably, Audi had previously dismissed the possibility of Wheatley leaving. Further announcements are anticipated soon.
Lawrence Stroll, the owner of Aston Martin, has reiterated his support for Newey and highlighted the unique structure within the Aston Martin team. Stroll carefully avoided commenting on the possibility of Wheatley joining the organization.
